Paediatric Osteopathy

Babies and Children

Our Osteopath Dr. Vicki Avramidis has worked with mothers and babies for many years and is experienced in dealing with issues around childbirth- both for the mother and child.

She may work with you and your child on issues as diverse as difficulty sucking and feeding, difficulty settling, discomfort, wind and reflux through to assessment of head asymmetry in the baby from the rigours of the birthing process. She uses a variety of techniques, from gentle hands on osteopathic techniques and baby massage through to observation and assessment of you interaction with your child during feeding, settling and sleeping.

During the birth process, the baby is subjected to enormous forces as the uterus pushes to expel the baby against the natural resistance of the birth canal. The baby has to twist and turn as it squeezes through the bony pelvis, absorbing these stresses within its head and body. This tension can be retained in the body after birth and birth strains may lead to your baby being more vulnerable to musculo-skeletal problems as they grow. Alternatively some babies struggle to adjust after being induced into labour or a Caesarian section and may benefit from some assistance from our experienced osteopath.

Dr. Vicki will work with your G.P. or paediatrician to find the best solution for you and your child to these challenging issues.

Osteopathy is very gentle, safe & may be effective in dealing with young children and babies. We do not use any joint manipulations on infants. Very gentle hands on techniques can be used if they may help to ease stress or strain but the Osteopath may also be interested in observing your interactions with the baby and giving advice and practical suggestions to improve attachment, suckling, feeding, settling or sleeping. The intervention of a highly trained and experienced osteopath not only influences the babies body but also the emotions and happiness of the child and of their parents.
