What is the field of Nutrition
Nutrition is the study of food at work in our bodies, our source for energy, and the medium for which our nutrients can function. Think of nutrition as the building blocks of life.
The essential nutrients for life include carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids (fats), as well as fibre, vitamins, minerals, and water—the solvent for all soluble ingredients in the blood and cells. The absorption of nutrients starts the moment we begin to digest our foods, as they are transported to assist all the metabolic processes in the human body.
Good nutrition means getting the right amount of nutrients from healthy foods in the right combinations. Having nutrition knowledge and making smart choices about the foods you eat can and will help you achieve optimum health over your lifetime, and be a key to avoiding obesity, illness, and many of today’s most prevalent chronic diseases.
Nutrition is just one key to developing and maintaining good health. Good health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being — a healthy mind, body, and spirit.
Nutrition is at work during our entire life-cycle — from infancy to adolescence, adulthood and in our senior years — and can be the antidote for many of today’s common problems, such as stress, pollution and disease prevention.
Nutrition translates into health, and health is freedom. Being healthy not only makes us feel great, it enables us to enjoy life to our fullest potential, and to follow our dreams. Conversely, a poor diet can have a serious impact on health, and rob you of your freedom.
Nutritional therapy is emerging as the latest prevention against multiple lifestyle diseases. We believe it’s better to pop an apple, rather than popping a pill. Negative influences such as stress, shock, injury, emotional upsets and worries can have a direct impact on life-long health. The good news is that the body can heal itself, if given what it needs to do its job. The nutrition in certain foods can help eliminate toxins, improve your digestion, and prevent, heal, or reduce the severity of various diseases. Nutrition is about choices.
Healthy eating is the best recipe for an abundant life. Make every bite count.
Nutrition is the science that interprets the interaction of nutrients and other substances in food in relation to maintenance, growth, reproduction, health and disease of an organism. It includes food intake, absorption, assimilation, biosynthesis, catabolism and excretion.
Nutrition also focuses on how diseases, conditions and problems can be prevented or lessened with a healthy diet.
In addition, nutrition involves identifying how certain diseases, conditions or problems may be caused by dietary factors.
What to expect during a consultation.
Whether you want to lose weight, explore deeper health concerns, or simply improve your diet, a nutrition therapy consultation can help you achieve your goals.
You are unique. Your genes, physiology, psychology, environment and lifestyle combine to give you a highly personal set of requirements. Our nutritionist can help you understand your personalised nutrition requirements and how to achieve them. You will be guided and supported through the process, which will help you to achieve your nutrition and health goals, whatever they may be!
At your initial consultation we like to get to know lots about you so that we can provide personalised advice. We collect information about your medical history, your lifestyle habits and dietary pattern and, importantly, your current health and wellbeing goals. The whole process can take around 1.5 hours.
Your nutritionist will explain what they believe may be causing your symptoms, and if appropriate may recommend functional testing. Functional tests are non-invasive tests that provide insight into the function of key body systems, helping to pinpoint where support may be needed to achieve your health goals.
Based on your unique requirements, a protocol will be developed that suits your lifestyle and will allow you to achieve your health goals. This may include dietary changes, lifestyle adjustments and supplement recommendations.
